BlueDragon Announced

J2EE based CFML Web Application Server

San Francisco, CA - March 24, 2002 - Today at JavaOne, New Atlanta Communications announced BlueDragon™, a Java™-based web application server that implements the ColdFusion® Markup Language (CFML) standard for dynamic web publishing. BlueDragon enables the integration of CFML with Java™ Servlets, JavaServer Pages™ (JSP), and other J2EE™ technologies.

Web developers will be able to use BlueDragon to seamlessly migrate existing CFML applications to any standard J2EE platform. These web applications may then be extended using Java Servlets, JSP or other J2EE technologies. BlueDragon also brings to the Java platform the benefits of CFML, a rich web-scripting language that is easy to use and has an extensive, intuitive tag library.

New Atlanta will release a public beta version of BlueDragon next month (April 2002).

BlueDragon history and implementation

BlueDragon is built upon two technology components. The base technology is ServletExec®, New Atlanta's award-winning, high-performance Java web application server, which has been in production since 1997. The other is a Java-based CFML engine, formerly known as tagServlet, which has been in production since 1998. The tagServlet technology was exclusively licensed by New Atlanta from n-ary (consultancy) Ltd., a U.K.-based company in November 2001.

BlueDragon will be available in a stand-alone server version and also as an add-on to existing J2EE application servers such as IBM WebSphere and BEA WebLogic. The stand-alone version of BlueDragon contains a built-in web server for development and testing, and integrates with Microsoft IIS, Netscape/iPlanet and Apache web servers for deployment. BlueDragon also contains JDBC™ drivers for all popular database servers, including JTurbo®, New Atlanta's J2EE-certified Type 4 JDBC driver for connecting to Microsoft SQL Server.

Alternative implementation offering

BlueDragon is an alternative implementation of the CFML standard that is designed to be superior to currently shipping products in several key ways. "As with all New Atlanta products, BlueDragon competes on standards compliance, performance, and reliability," reported Vince Bonfanti, President of New Atlanta. "In addition, we intend to offer product configurations that provide the greatest value of any product on the market. BlueDragon will do more and cost less."

Features and requirements

Implemented in Java, BlueDragon increases the scalability, performance and reliability of CFML applications. BlueDragon allows CFML developers to seamlessly migrate and integrate their applications to J2EE platforms and take advantage of Java's core language features and rich APIs, such as:

  • Java Servlets and JSP
  • Enterprise JavaBeans™ (EJB)
  • JDBC
  • Java Message Service (JMS)
  • Java Naming and Directory Interface™ (JNDI)

BlueDragon supports all major web servers including Microsoft IIS, Netscape Enterprise Server, IPlanet Web Server, and Apache Web Server. BlueDragon runs on all major operating systems including Windows NT/2000/XP, Solaris, and Linux.
