JTurbo 3.0 Released

Release implements JDBC 3.0 specification

San Francisco, CA - March 24, 2002 - At JavaOne today, New Atlanta Communications, a leading producer of server-side Java products, announced the immediate availability of JTurbo 3.0, the newest release of its Type 4 JDBC Driver for Microsoft SQL Server®. Commercially available now, JTurbo 3.0 implements the JDBC 3.0 specification which was released as part of JDK 1.4 earlier this month.

A Type 4 driver that is J2EE™ certified by Sun Microsystems®, JTurbo allows users to connect to Microsoft's SQL Server from Java applets or applications running on any major operating system, including Windows, Unix, Linux and Mac OS. JTurbo offers the highest degree of platform independence, performance and deployment administration for database connectivity provided under Sun's JDBC specification. Type 4, or "pure Java," JDBC drivers convert JDBC calls to the native protocol used by the database vendor, communicating directly with the database server without requiring native code.

"After rigorous testing, we're pleased to be able to offer a high-performance, robust, and reliable product to our customers, helping them to take advantage of this newest JDBC release," said Paul Bonfanti, co-founder and Vice President of Engineering for New Atlanta. "We know from our Beta customers that the added features and improvements are valuable to them. We want to thank them for their time and thorough comments of 3.0's Beta version, knowing that they were integral in making the released product solid and seamless."

Among the added or improved features for JTurbo 3.0 are:

  • Savepoint support
  • Statement pooling support
  • Improved connection pool configuration
  • Retrieval of parameter metadata
  • Retrieval of auto-generated keys
  • Multiple Open ResultSets per statement
  • CallableStatement named parameters
  • ResultSet holdability support
  • Cached RowSet, JDBC RowSet and WebRowSet support
  • Distributed Transactions

JTurbo was acquired by New Atlanta in the third quarter of 2001 to meet a need within their customer base. Because growing numbers of web application developers use Microsoft products and thus require access to SQL Server, the JTurbo driver was added to the New Atlanta product line, augmenting their ServletExec web application server.

A mature driver, JTurbo has been in production since 1998. New Atlanta has continued to enhance and improve its features in keeping with customer requests and current JDK and JDBC releases, with the goal of making JTurbo the best engineered, most reliable and highest performing driver available.

Pricing and Availability

For current JTurbo customers, updates and upgrades to JTurbo 3.0 are offered for free or at discounted prices. No fee is required for updating JTurbo 1.22, JTurbo 2.0, or JTurbo 2.0E to its equivalent JTurbo 3.0 version. For customers making the move to JDBC 3.0, JTurbo is offered at discounted license fees beginning at $345. New purchases for development and deployment licensing begin at $595. Developers may download JTurbo for evaluation for 30 days, at no charge.

Support Provided

The JTurbo driver continues to be reliable and easy to use. Thorough support is provided on the New Atlanta website to augment its use. Included are FAQs, online documentation (installation guides, user guides), hints and tips on maximizing performance and use with various application servers, and community-based product interest mailing lists.

Fee-based support is also offered to provide immediate access to highly-trained, experienced technical staff. JTurbo experts provide prompt turn-around times in each level of support, from online bug tracking to real-time paging and phone access.
