New Atlanta Acquires JTurbo Business Unit
Expands software offerings to include SunTM-certified Type 4 JDBCTM drivers for MicrosoftTM SQL ServerTM
Alpharetta, Georgia - August 15, 2001 - New Atlanta Communications, LLC, creators of the ServletExecTM web application server, today announced that they have completed the acquisition of the JTurboTM business unit from Ashna Incorporated, a privately-held Newark, California-based firm. The acquisition strengthens New Atlanta's position as a leading provider of deployment tools within the Java-based web application server market by expanding the company's software offerings to include Sun-certified Type 4 JDBC drivers for Microsoft SQL Server 6.5, 7 and 2000. No financial details of the acquisition have been disclosed.
"We are very pleased to have completed the JTurbo acquisition. JTurbo fits not only with our long-term growth strategy of acquiring complementary technology; it also fulfills a basic need within our expanding customer base. Because a large percentage of our customers use Microsoft products, offering a JDBC driver to connect to SQL Server enables us to offer a more complete solution for deploying web-based applications," explained Vince Bonfanti, President of New Atlanta Communications. "JTurbo is a mature driver that has been in production since 1998 - we wanted to be certain that we would be offering proven technology to our customers. Additionally, it embodies a similar set of values as ServletExec: standards compliance, performance, reliability and ease-of-use. We feel that this consistency and attention to quality is something our customers will appreciate."
Taking advantage of the "Write Once, Run Anywhere™" capabilities of the Java programming language, JDBC is an application programming interface (API) that enables cross-platform access to data sources. Developers are able to utilize this technology to connect databases across a heterogeneous network environment for enterprise-wide access to data.
JTurbo is a Type 4 compliant JDBC driver, meaning that it offers the highest degree of platform independence, performance and deployment administration for database connectivity provided under Sun's JDBC specification. Type 4, or "pure Java", JDBC drivers convert JDBC calls to the native protocol used by the database vendor, communicating directly with the database server without requiring native code.
Version 3.0 of the JTurbo driver, currently available in beta form, is compliant with the JDBC 3.0 specification and features Savepoint support, Resultset Holdability support, Multiple Open resultsets per statement, JNDI Support, DataSource and Connection Pool implementations, as well as disconnected RowSet(Cached RowSet) implementation. Support for the JDBC RowSet and WebRowSet implementations is under development. JTurbo 3.0 is to be certified upon Sun's final release of the JDBC 3.0 specification this fall; version 2.0 is already certified to Sun's JDBC 2.0 specification.
"With New Atlanta's greater resources, we believe we can build upon the excellent engineering work of Ashna and extend the benefits of JTurbo to a larger set of customers. Because we own the technology rather than license it from a third party, we can control the development and offer a tighter integration with ServletExec - which ultimately benefits our customers," said Bonfanti. ServletExec, New Atlanta's award-winning Servlet/JSP engine, runs on all major web servers, including Microsoft IIS, Netscape/iPlanet, and Apache, and is supported on Windows NT/2000, Solaris, Linux and AIX. The proposed integration with JTurbo will be supported on multiple platforms, although Microsoft limits SQL Server installation to Windows-based operating systems.
Both ServletExec and JTurbo are available for download from the New Atlanta Communications web site at www.newatlanta.com. JTurbo may be evaluated free for 30-days and the ServletExec Debugger - used for development - is available at no charge.
